Christmas Candles

The Christmas Custom, Origin and History of Christmas Candles

The candle is used in the religious ceremonies of many different faiths. The lighting effects created by candles were used for for decoration and ambiance. In Christianity a candle is a symbol that represents the light of God or the light of Jesus Christ.

The Color of Christmas Candles

The color of Christmas Candles is highly significant. White Candles represent the liturgical color of Christmas. On Christmas Eve the Advent Wreath has a white candle in the center which symbolises purity and joy. It is known as the Christ candle which represents Christ born on Christmas day. The Pink candle, the Advent candle, is used on the third Sunday of Advent traditionally when the congregation was given a break from fasting.

Christmas Candles on the Tree

The Christmas Tree became popular in the Victorian era and trees were decorated with small candles. The candles were carefully lit and created a magical sight. The real Christmas candles were replaced by electric Christmas Lights in  1882 when Edward H. Johnson, the vice president of the Edison Electric Light Company, had red, white and blue electric incandescent light bulbs wired to his tree. These electric tree lights were extremely expensive and for this reason were not widely used until the 1930's.

The Tradition of Placing Christmas Candles at the Window

The tradition of placing a lighted Christmas candle at the window dates back to the Medieval era. A legend told that on Christmas Eve the Christ Child wandered throughout the world, looking for places where he would be welcomed. People placed a lighted Christmas candle in the window as a sign that He would be welcome in their home. From this custom another tradition of Christians arose which was to welcome into their homes all who knocked at their doors on Christmas Eve.

The Menorah

The Seven-Branched Candlestick, called the Menorah, represents the Holy Spirit and its seven gifts of Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Might, Knowledge, Fear of the Lord and Delight in the Lord.

Christmas Candles

Christmas is celebrated worldwide, throughout the Christian population of approximately 2275 million people, but is also celebrated by many non-Christians as a secular, cultural festival. A Christmas custom or tradition is symbolized by a familiar symbol or icon, such as Christmas Candles,  have come to represent the spirit and meaning of this special time of the year.
